“HOW IS YOUR COSTUME AGENTIVE?” (“CAPUCHAS GRATIS! Por el derecho al anonimato”)

In the hood we see the need for anonymity to fight against political persecution, but also the formation of a common identity that we believed to be lost; we met again and rebuilt community. A piece of cloth could become a symbol of democracy and protest so strong that it has enabled popular empowerment in recent months.

“HOW IS YOUR COSTUME AGENTIVE?” (“PECES CAMINANDO!”)

The costumes and their limitations and possibilities were the axis around which the actions of the performance were defined. The relationship generated with the costumes is intimate and organic, and directly affects the actions of each performer. They became more aware of their corporality and how it relates to their environment.

BIOGRAPHY

Complejo Conejo is a Chilean Performance collective composed of performance designers and actors from the University of Chile. Through highly visual performances in which concepts such as theatricality, visuality, masking and performativity intersect, Complejo Conejo proposes to rethink the way we inhabit public and private spaces. Local aesthetics, memory and pop culture, as well as visual and performing arts are used as a reference, social life and the political context are also key elements to creation. Complejo Conejo proposes the artistic validation of the intuition, caprice and play as a creation methodology.

TITLE: FREE HOODS! For the right to anonymity

After the social outbreak on October 18th in Chile, the performers of Complejo Conejo decided to conduct a massive free hand out of masks made out of fabric to protect the identities of protesters as a form of resistance against the anti-masking and criminalization policies of the protest promoted by the Chilean Government. Masked and under the slogan FOR THE RIGHT TO ANONYMITY we distributed weekly between 300 and 500 free hoods in the renamed Dignity Square (ground zero of the demonstrations in Santiago). Thanks to the power of social networks, this action quickly went viral throughout Chile, causing many people and groups to replicate the initiative.

The hood, an accessory linked in dictatorship to groups opposing Pinochet and then in democracy to “terrorists” or “criminals”, has changed its meaning and public appreciation in recent months thanks to these kind of initiatives; a harmless piece of fabric that covers the face comes to life as a symbol of the fight of the people against the oppressing ruling class, giving the citizenry the possibility of generating a new identity, a sense of community and security. The anonymity and the right to protest contained in a democratic piece of fabric.

TITLE: PECES CAMINANDO!

If the city is the sea, passersby are fish. That is the central idea that led us to create PECES CAMINANDO!, performance released at the Prague Quadrennial (PQ) ‘19.

This idea is the result of a year of exploration around a whim that we had for a long time: fishes. As a group, we tend to listen to our whims with great attention, and that has sometimes led us to design costumes for projects that are still non-existent, which are then developed from the costume proposal, with all of the possibilities and limitations that the design offers to the performer. There is no narrative that determines the action, the costumes are the main stimulus from where the performance is created.

Formations we decided to take these sketches and bring them to reality. The design of the fish seeks to reflect the eclecticism present in modern cities, to all passersby regardless of their origins, sex or economic condition. The silhouettes and garments are designed from an androgenic notion where the body of the performer is not decisive. The garments offer particular expressive freedoms to each performer, who disappears under the costumes and the mask to embody a collective being.
